10-yr-old makes Satara proud

Satara: Citizens of Satara will be proud while welcoming a new postal stamp, which would be based on a painting by Swarali Vishwanath Bhakare, a 10-year-old student here.

The department of posts commemorates Children’s Day every year by bringing out stamps designed by children. The designs are selected by holding an all India competition. For this year’s stamp the competition was conducted on November 14, 2006on the theme ‘The magic of the night’.

Swarali Bhakare, daughter of constable Vishwanath, won the first prize in Group I and B. Karthick of Pudukottai in Tamil Nadu won the first prize in Group II.

The postal department will release about eight lakh stamps of these designs from December 1. The stamps will be priced at Rs 5.

Swarali was studying in the fourth standard of Annasaheb Raje Bhosale primary school when she participated in the competition. Swarali told TOI that she wanted to pursue a career in painting and loves swimming and dancing. She had bagged a state-level gold medal in a painting competition and has won several local contests.

“She is a bright student. I have a dream to enrol her in the J.J. School of Arts,” her father, himself an arts graduate, told TOI.

Swarali is studying in Std V at the Anant English School and taking her drawing lessons at Kala Niketan under the guidance of Shekhar Hasbnis.

“Her uncle Kailas Bhakare is also a good painter, who helps Swarali in paintings. At home her mother Sangita, also an art graduate, helps her and her brother Partha who is in Std II, with their studies,” Vishwanath said.

The police and postal departments and many local mandals have felicitated the emerging artist.

Swarali Bhakare’s painting will be depicted on a Rs 5 postal stamp to be issued on December 1
